About this position

This PhD project at the University of East Anglia investigates the complex interactions between adherent-invasive E. coli (AIEC), the gut microbiome, and the intestinal epithelium in the context of Crohn’s Disease (CD). CD is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease affecting over 120,000 people in the UK, often diagnosed in young adulthood and associated with significant morbidity. Current treatments are limited and can cause severe side effects, while the underlying causes of CD remain unclear.

Research suggests that environmental and genetic factors disrupt the gut microbiome, leading to increased gut permeability and an overactive immune response. AIEC is frequently found in CD tissue, but its role as a cause or consequence of the disease is not fully understood. The project aims to unravel the crosstalk between AIEC and the microbiome and its impact on inflammation using advanced techniques such as microaerobic intestinal cell models, human organoid technology, cell and molecular biology, confocal microscopy, and metagenomic sequence analysis.

The research will contribute to the development of improved therapies for CD by restoring microbial homeostasis. The successful candidate will work in the state-of-the-art Bob Champion Research & Education Building at Norwich Research Park, supervised by an interdisciplinary team from UEA Norwich Medical School and the Earlham Institute.

The studentship is fully funded for four years, covering tuition fees, a generous stipend (£20,780 for 2025/26), and a Research Training Support Grant. Applicants should have at least a UK equivalent Bachelors (Honours) degree with a minimum of 2:1 and meet English language requirements (IELTS 6.5 overall, 6 in each category).
