PhD Studentship: The Hidden Immune System of Fungi—Uncovering the Roles of NLR Genes
The University of Birmingham is offering a PhD studentship in fungal immunology and molecular microbiology, based in Birmingham, United Kingdom. The project investigates how nucleotide-binding and leucine-rich repeat (NLR) genes contribute to the cryptic immune system of fungi.
Using the genetically tractable wheat pathogen Zymoseptoria tritici, which contains 20 NLRs, the research will examine fungal-bacterial interactions, self-incompatibility, and interactions with host plants. The project will involve fungal gene knockout generation and characterisation, high-throughput microbial screens, RNA-seq profiling, confocal fluorescence microscopy, and proximity labelling methods such as TurboID to identify protein-protein interactions involved in fungal immune responses.
The studentship is funded by the BBSRC through the Midlands Integrated Biosciences Training Partnership (MIBTP), involving the University of Birmingham and partner universities including Warwick, Aston, Harper Adams, Coventry, and Leicester. Training will span molecular and cellular biology, bioinformatics, and protein biochemistry.
The deadline is 23 November 2026. For informal enquiries, contact Dr Graeme Kettles at [email protected]. Applications should be submitted through the jobs.ac.uk vacancy page.
