About this position
XPRES at KTH Royal Institute of Technology is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to advance understanding of process–microstructure–property relationships in metal additive manufacturing, with a particular focus on electron beam powder bed fusion (PBF-EB).
The project explores how process strategy, geometry, and thermal history affect local microstructure and material properties in complex components. The research uses an Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) approach, combining modeling, process data, and experimental characterization to connect processing conditions with material behavior and structural integrity.
Depending on the selected researcher’s background, the work may include:
- materials, process, and microstructure modeling
- process-data analysis
- materials characterization
- mechanical testing
The position is based at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and carried out within XPRES, the Centre of Excellence in Production Research. XPRES is a long-term national initiative established in 2010 that brings together KTH, Mälardalen University, RISE, and Swerim in close collaboration with industry to advance sustainable, digitalized, and human-centric manufacturing. The postdoc will work in a multi-partner research environment and collaborate with researchers in materials science, structural mechanics, and production engineering.
The role offers scope to help shape the scientific direction and to develop new methods at the interface between these fields.

What's required
A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree is required and must be met no later than the time the employment decision is made. The candidate should have research expertise in materials science, materials engineering, mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering or another relevant field, with demonstrated experience in metallic materials and additive manufacturing, rapid solidification, computational materials science or materials modelling. Experience connecting computational or theoretical approaches with experimental data or materials characterization is required, together with the ability to independently formulate and address scientific research questions. Good collaborative abilities and an interest in working across disciplinary boundaries are expected. Preferred qualifications include a doctoral degree obtained within the last three years, experience with ICME, CALPHAD, microstructure or process modelling, experience with powder bed fusion or other metal additive manufacturing processes, combining modelling and experiments in materials research, scientific publications, and awareness of diversity and equal opportunity issues with a focus on gender equality.
How to apply
Log into KTH’s recruitment system and submit the application online. Include a CV, copies of diplomas and grades, translations into English or Swedish if needed, and a brief motivation letter of up to two pages. Make sure the complete application is received by the deadline at midnight CET/CEST.
