About this position
Utrecht University is advertising a postdoc in ocean acidification and the marine phosphorus cycle within the NWO-funded PHOSFLUX project. The work sits in the Faculty of Geosciences, Department of Earth Sciences, and combines fieldwork, laboratory experiments, and numerical modelling to understand how CaCO3 fluxes and acidification affect phosphorus cycling, ocean fertility, and CO2 uptake.
The postdoctoral researcher will develop a reactive-transport model for phosphorus dynamics in sinking and deposited marine snow. The model will include processes such as CaCO3 dissolution, organic matter decomposition, and adsorption/incorporation of PO4 into solid phases. The role also involves testing the model against experimental and field data in collaboration with the PHOSFLUX PhD student.
Relevant academic keywords include biogeochemical modelling, marine research, Earth sciences, environmental sciences, ocean chemistry, mineral-water interactions, and synchrotron-based analysis. The project is a collaboration between Utrecht University and NIOZ, with supervision/contact from Prof. Dr Mariëtte Wolthers and Dr Peter Kraal.
Applicants must have completed a PhD in Earth Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Biology, or a related discipline by the start date. Preferred experience includes biogeochemistry, marine research, numerical modelling of mineral-water interactions and/or organic matter degradation, and interest in synchrotron techniques. Strong English communication skills, teamwork, and willingness to travel abroad for synchrotron beamtime are also highlighted.
The position is 1.0 FTE for 36 months with a gross monthly salary of €3,706–€5,760 (scale 10), plus holiday pay, year-end bonus, pension, and other employment benefits. The role is based in Utrecht, Netherlands. The application deadline is 31 October 2026.
