About this position
University of Oxford, Department of Physics, is recruiting a PostDoc to help build a self-driving laboratory for organic photovoltaics. This 3-year position is the first postdoctoral role on Moritz Riede’s Royal Academy of Engineering Green Future Fellowship, focused on enabling terawatt-scale, ultra-low-carbon organic photovoltaics made by vacuum processing.
The successful candidate will take a leading role in designing and integrating automated experimental workflows around the UK’s National Thin Film Cluster Facility at Oxford. The role sits at the intersection of hardware control, data science, machine learning, and materials discovery, with substantial freedom to shape the self-driving laboratory architecture.
Applicants should hold, or be close to completing, a strong experimental or computational PhD in physics, engineering, computer science, or a related field. The post also asks for demonstrable experience in lab automation or control systems, strong programming skills (for example Python), and enthusiasm for building robust data/ML workflows and contributing to a greener future.
The position is based in the Department of Physics at the University of Oxford and is embedded in a collaborative ecosystem spanning physics, materials, chemistry, and engineering, with external academic and industrial partners.
Deadline: midday (UK time), Tuesday 12 May 2026.
