About this position
The 202Q-lab at Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a postdoctoral position focused on the development of travelling wave parametric amplifiers (TWPAs) based on the nonlinear kinetic inductance of superconducting thin films. This research aims to advance the integration of TWPAs in superconducting qubit readout systems and validate KI‑TWPA technology for scalable quantum computing applications. The position is funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg (KAW) Proof of Concept Grants in AI, Quantum technologies or ICT.
Chalmers' Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience is a leader in quantum technology, nanoscience, photonics, and future electronic systems, offering a vibrant, international research environment and access to world-class nanofabrication facilities. The Quantum Technology Laboratory (202Q-lab) explores quantum computing, sensing, transduction, thermodynamics, and the foundations of quantum physics, with a mission to translate curiosity-driven research into technological and societal impact. The division is part of the Wallenberg Centre for Quantum Technology (WACQT), a major Swedish initiative to advance quantum technology and build a national quantum computer.
The research project addresses the challenge of efficient quantum bit readout in scalable superconducting quantum processors. The 202Q-lab has developed a prototype KI‑TWPA, which offers high gain, wide bandwidth, and excellent power handling at both millikelvin and 4 K temperatures, potentially replacing conventional HEMT amplifiers and simplifying cryogenic hardware. The postdoc will lead the further development and experimental validation of this technology, including device design and simulation, nanofabrication, microwave characterization at cryogenic temperatures, and integration with superconducting qubit experiments. The ultimate goal is to validate the technology and develop a minimum viable product for quantum computing applications.
Applicants should hold a PhD in Physics, Applied Physics, Nanotechnology, Microwave Engineering, or a related field, with hands-on experience in areas such as mesoscopic physics, superconducting circuits, nanofabrication, cryogenics, microwave design, or microwave measurements. Strong English communication skills and a proven research track record are required. The position is a full-time, temporary employment for two years, with the possibility of a one-year extension. Physical presence in Sweden is required, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the start date.
Chalmers offers a dynamic and inclusive working environment in Gothenburg, with comprehensive employee benefits and support for international staff, including Swedish language courses. The university is committed to gender equality and diversity through initiatives like the GENIE project.
Applications should be submitted in English via the provided application link by April 16, 2026. Required documents include a CV with a full publication list, details of teaching experience, and a personal letter outlining your background and research goals. References will be requested after the interview stage. For further information, contact Prof. Simone Gasparinetti at [email protected].
