About this position
Argonne National Laboratory is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Appointee focused on magnon dark-matter quantum detection and axion dark matter detection. The position is based at Lemont, Illinois, USA and is part of a multidisciplinary effort between the Materials Science Division and High Energy Physics Division at Argonne, with close collaboration with the University of Notre Dame.
The successful candidate will work on developing superconducting hybrid circuits that couple to macroscopic magnetic crystals and single-crystal YIG spheres for improved magnon target mass and detector sensitivity. Research also includes building detector demonstration experiments to measure quantum efficiency and dark count rates, as well as creating novel quantum-limit devices such as parametric amplifiers and qubits for on-chip magnon quantum sensing.
This opportunity is especially relevant to candidates in Physics, Materials Science, and Electrical Engineering, with strong overlap in quantum sensing, magnonics, superconducting circuits, microwave engineering, and high-energy physics. Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in Condensed Matter Physics, Experimental High Energy Physics, Quantum Information Science, or a closely related field.
Required and preferred skills include superconducting resonator design, simulation, and nanofabrication; microwave circuit design and characterization; cryogenic measurements, ideally with a dilution refrigerator; low-noise microwave measurement techniques; and practical experience building sample holders and electronic experimental setups. Proficiency with scientific software such as Python, COMSOL, and HFSS is also requested.
The appointment is full-time and the advertised hiring range is $72,879-$121,465, with comprehensive benefits available through Argonne. Applications should be submitted through the Workday careers link in the posting.
