About this position

The Halassa lab at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at Virginia Tech Carilion invites applications for a postdoctoral associate to study the neural basis of flexible cognition. The project combines state-of-the-art neural recording technologies, complex cognitive tasks, and computational models to understand how brain networks support attentional control and task switching, and how disruptions in these circuits may contribute to neuropsychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia.

The successful candidate will lead research in rodent and tree shrew models, working on questions that connect basic circuit mechanisms to cognition and translational neuroscience. The role emphasizes in vivo neurophysiological recordings, behavioral assays, and computational analysis of large-scale neural datasets, with opportunities to develop and refine paradigms that target specific brain networks.

The postdoctoral researcher will receive direct mentorship from the Principal Investigator and guidance from senior research personnel in a highly collaborative research environment. Responsibilities also include manuscript preparation, conference presentations, and participation in fellowship and grant proposal development.

Funding details

Restricted postdoctoral appointment with salary information of $63,480-$65,000 for 40+ hours per week.

What's required

A PhD in Neuroscience, Biomedical Engineering, Psychology, or a closely related quantitative field is required, and the doctorate must have been awarded no more than four years prior to the effective date of appointment with at least one year of eligibility remaining. Applicants should have prior experience working with animal models (rodents or other mammalian models) and evidence of scientific productivity through peer-reviewed publications or preprints. Preferred qualifications include a strong analytical and computational background, proficiency in spike train analysis and neural decoding, advanced programming skills in MATLAB, Python, or R, and experience with surgical procedures and in vivo recording techniques such as electrophysiology or calcium imaging.
