About this position

The University of Hong Kong is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Microbiology, School of Clinical Medicine. The researcher will join a vibrant multidisciplinary team working on emerging infectious diseases and computationally driven life-science research.

This is primarily a dry-lab position carried out in close collaboration with a wet-lab team. The research will address virus-host interactions, pathogenic determinants and virus evolution, with opportunities to independently lead projects, prepare manuscripts, contribute to grant applications, and co-supervise junior researchers and graduate students.

Possible research directions include multi-omics and single-cell analysis of cellular heterogeneity, host-pathogen interactions and immune responses; structural bioinformatics and biophysical modeling of viral spike or capsid architecture, thermal stability and immune epitope accessibility; artificial intelligence and deep learning for antigenicity, genetic variation and viral-evolution prediction; and viral genomics, evolutionary analysis, Linux/HPC workflows and next-generation sequencing pipeline development.

The group combines computational biology with experimental microbiology and virology, offering a collaborative environment for researchers working across bioinformatics, molecular biology, immunology, pathogen biology and infectious-disease research. The post is associated with a research programme whose recent work has appeared in journals including Nature, Nature Communications, PNAS and Science Advances.

Funding details

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, together with annual leave and medical benefits. The appointment is for two to three years, with possible renewal and promotion subject to funding availability and satisfactory performance.

What's required

Applicants must possess a Ph.D. in Virology, Immunology, Microbiology, Pathogen Biology, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related discipline. Candidates should be responsible, self-motivated, attentive to detail, have a strong command of English, and demonstrate a strong publication record showing the capacity to use bioinformatic platforms in life-science research. Proficiency in at least one programming language such as R, Python, C, or C++ is required. Strong expertise in at least one of multi-omics and single-cell analysis, structural bioinformatics and biophysical modeling, AI/deep learning, or genomics and bioinformatics is expected. Hybrid candidates with computational skills and hands-on molecular or virology experience are particularly encouraged, while pure computational biologists are also welcome.

How to apply

Apply online through the University of Hong Kong application portal and upload an up-to-date CV, two academic reference letters (preferably including one from the Ph.D. supervisor), and supporting documents including transcripts, publication list, research experience and representative outputs.
