About this position
The National Research Council Canada is recruiting a Postdoctoral Fellow in inorganic and organometallic polymer synthesis for advanced ceramics in Ottawa, Canada. The two-year project, High-Yield Printable Polymers for Extreme Refractory Materials (HYPER Materials), addresses materials for defence, aerospace, space, and advanced energy systems.
The fellow will design, synthesize, purify, and characterize transition-metal-containing preceramic polymers, coordination-complex precursor systems, and related inorganic or hybrid precursors. Research will connect molecular structure and processing with ceramic yield, pyrolysis behaviour, phase evolution, and composition. The role provides access to facilities for air- and moisture-sensitive chemistry, polymer and molecular characterization, thermal analysis, high-temperature processing, and microstructural evaluation. Potential downstream applications include coatings, infiltration, and 3D printing.
Applicants need a PhD in chemistry or a closely related field and demonstrated synthetic chemistry experience. Relevant strengths include synthetic polymer chemistry, inorganic or organometallic synthesis, coordination chemistry, preceramic polymers, polymer-derived ceramics, thermal analysis, ceramic conversion, microstructural characterization, additive manufacturing, and coating processes. Candidates generally must have completed a PhD on or after July 1, 2024, or expect to complete it within six months of appointment.
The position offers a two-year paid appointment with an AsRO salary range of $83,985–$116,641, benefits, and a travel fund. Applications require a resume, one-page statement of interest, PhD transcript, and publication list. The closing date is January 7, 2027, at 23:59 Eastern Time.

What's required
Applicants must hold a PhD in chemistry or a closely related discipline, with demonstrated experience in synthetic chemistry. Candidates should have obtained their PhD within the past three years (on or after July 1, 2024) or expect to complete it within six months of appointment, subject to exceptions for personal or family-related leave. Experience in synthetic polymer chemistry, inorganic or organometallic synthesis, air- or moisture-sensitive synthesis, coordination chemistry, preceramic polymers or polymer-derived ceramics, polymer and molecular characterization, thermal analysis, ceramic conversion or high-temperature processing, microstructural characterization, additive manufacturing, or coating processes is considered an asset. English is required. Applicants must provide a resume, a maximum one-page statement of interest, a PhD transcript, and a publication list; three recommendation letters may be requested later. Reliability Status clearance and background verification covering five years are required.
