About this position
The VIB Center for Molecular Neurology at the University of Antwerp is seeking a postdoctoral scientist for the Computational Neurobiology lab. The project sits at the intersection of genetics, systems biology, computational biology, and neuroscience, focusing on regulatory mechanisms that control cell-type-specific switching of alternative gene isoforms in dementia.
The researcher will investigate alternative transcription start-site and termination-site usage in Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and Dementia with Lewy Bodies. The work aims to clarify how chromatin organization and epigenetic factors influence isoform choice across neurodegenerative diseases.
The project will involve building an isoform-specific regulatory atlas of the human brain in health and disease, identifying causal regulatory elements and transcription factors that determine alternative transcription-site choice, and identifying genetically supported disease-associated isoforms. Methods include single-cell and multimodal data analysis, genome-wide profiling, statistical analysis, machine learning, and cis-regulatory network reconstruction.
The host environment combines the VIB-UAntwerp Center for Molecular Neurology with the VIB Center for AI and Computational Biology. Researchers have access to international collaborations, bioinformatics and functional genomics facilities, neuroimmunology expertise, and a broad computational and machine-learning community. The center brings together research in human genetics, genomics, protein biochemistry, neuronal and glial cell biology, integrative systems biology, and computational biology, with models including human cells, organoids, mouse, fly, and yeast.

What's required
Applicants must hold a PhD in computational biology, systems biology, bioinformatics or a related discipline, or a PhD in molecular biology, biomedical sciences, functional genomics or a related discipline with strong computational experience. Candidates should have solid experience in single-cell data analysis, multimodal data integration, reconstruction and analysis of gene regulatory mechanisms, and knowledge of 3D chromatin organization principles. Intermediate or advanced programming skills in R and/or Python, excellent English communication and writing skills, and a strong academic record are required. Experience analyzing 3D chromatin organization or proteomics data is beneficial but not required.
