About this position
The Department of Physics at The Pennsylvania State University is seeking a postdoctoral research associate to contribute to federally funded research through the 2D Crystal Consortium (2DCC) and LATTICE, a programmable cloud laboratory for layered and thin-film technologies.
The research focuses on the synthesis of two-dimensional quantum materials using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), followed by in-vacuo characterization with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and a four-probe low-temperature nanoscanning probe. The postdoctoral scholar will help operate and maintain the 2DCC MBE/ARPES/low-temperature nanoscanning-probe cluster tool while supporting user projects conducted through the 2DCC materials innovation platform.
Within LATTICE, the researcher will integrate MBE and ARPES capabilities into an autonomous experimentation ecosystem. Activities include developing in-situ feedback and control, enabling autonomous deposition-tool operation, and contributing to artificial intelligence and machine-learning workflows for materials synthesis and characterization. The role also involves integrating experimental data and model outputs into the Lifetime Sample Tracking database and helping develop cloud-laboratory interfaces for external users.
The scholar will work in a collaborative research environment alongside equipment vendors, AI researchers developing agentic workflow frameworks, data scientists, and future users of the LATTICE cloud laboratory. The position is based at Penn State University Park and combines condensed-matter physics, materials science, advanced surface characterization, thin-film growth, and intelligent laboratory automation.
