About this position

The University of California, Santa Barbara’s California NanoSystems Institute is recruiting two postdoctoral researchers for a project on the foundations of a resilient microbiome. The work is centered on machine learning and computational modeling to identify pathways along the gut-brain axis that connect the infant microbiome with neurodevelopment and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

The project is part of the Wellcome Leap FORM initiative and uses a closed-loop research approach that brings together experiments, modeling, and lived experiences. The successful postdoctoral researcher will help develop statistical and dynamical models from metabolomic and metagenomic data generated through experiments at UCSB’s ExFAB BioFoundry for Extreme and Exceptional Fungi, Archea, and Bacteria. The research also includes perturbation studies, dynamic trajectory analysis, and assessment of stability and resilience, linking AI-driven and dynamical models with experimental protocols and outcomes.

The position is embedded in a broad interdisciplinary environment at UCSB. The postdoc will have access to collaborations and resources across the REAL AI initiative, the Departments of Physics, Ecology, Evolution and Marine Biology, Psychology and Brain Sciences, the College of Engineering, and the Koegel Autism Center. The appointment offers scope for creative contributions within a multidisciplinary team working at the interface of computation, biology, and autism-related research.
