About this position
EPFL’s Laboratory of Particle Accelerator Physics (LPAP) is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to work on accelerator design for the Future Circular Collider electron–positron project (FCC-ee). The research is part of the CHART-funded project “General Accelerator Design at the FCC-ee: optics, tuning knobs and collective effects studies.”
The researcher will contribute to robust and optimized FCC-ee lattice design, with particular emphasis on beam–beam interactions and collective effects. The work will address luminosity, beam lifetime and dynamic aperture, while analyzing the sensitivity of lattice options to beam–beam forces and machine imperfections. The project also involves developing alternative optics configurations that reduce nonlinearities and improve beam stability under high-intensity operating conditions.
A major focus is the development of flexible correction schemes and tuning knobs for real-time adjustment of lattice parameters. These tools will help operators respond to changing beam conditions, mitigate beam–beam effects and suppress resonances. Potential research directions include optics tools for collider performance, optics compatible with high-temperature superconducting nested magnets, beam-polarization optimization and top-up injection schemes.
The postdoctoral researcher will tailor the work according to their expertise and interests, support parallel developments led by PhD students, and help establish tolerances for robust overall accelerator design. Responsibilities also include coordinating collaborative research within the FCC-ee community, proposing alternative design solutions, contributing to scientific publications, participating in PhD-student supervision and supporting teaching activities such as exercises, experiments and semester projects.
The position provides an opportunity to work in an interdisciplinary and international environment with FCC-ee beam-physics teams on next-generation particle colliders, beam dynamics, computational design and accelerator modeling.
