About this position
The Faculty of Law at the University of Helsinki is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher in Legal History within the Research Council of Finland-funded project MORALMEM. The project is associated with Dr. Karolina Stenlund and focuses on the legal history of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA), combining law, history, memory studies, and broader political inquiry into how Holocaust memory has been shaped in Europe.
The successful candidate will develop an independent research agenda aligned with the project, produce single-authored peer-reviewed articles, and may co-author or edit academic work with the PI and collaborators. The role also includes participation in workshops, seminars, conferences, public outreach, teaching/co-teaching, and supervision of undergraduate students.
Eligibility requires a relevant doctoral degree (the PhD diploma must be obtained by the first day of employment). The degree should normally have been completed within the last five years, excluding family leave and similar absences. The university particularly values experience with archival research, critical approaches to legal history and memory studies, collaborative and independent research ability, public engagement, and strong English and Swedish language skills.
The appointment is for one year, starting 1 February 2027 (or as agreed) and ending 31 January 2028. The post is based in Finland, and the appointee is expected to reside there during employment. The annual gross salary is approximately €48,000–€50,000, with a personal performance component, and the position includes standard Finnish university staff benefits and about 5–10% teaching duties.
To apply, submit a motivation letter, CV, publication list, and a two-page research plan through the University of Helsinki recruitment system by the deadline. Applications are due by 30 October 2026 at 23:59 EEST.
