About this position
The Department of Physics at the University of Jyväskylä is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher to join the Synthetic Quantum Materials Group for experimental work at the intersection of nanoscience and quantum materials.
The project centers on scanning tunneling microscopy of atomically thin and engineered quantum systems, with a strong emphasis on the controlled fabrication, clean assembly, and atomic-scale characterization of two-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures. The researcher will work on nanostructured quantum materials, including topological systems, 2D materials, and graphene-based devices, aiming to uncover emergent electronic and magnetic phenomena.
The position offers access to advanced cryogenic STM infrastructure, including a 1 K STM operating in magnetic fields up to 8 T and a 4 K STM coupled with optical spectroscopy for STM-induced luminescence and tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. The role combines fabrication, low-temperature scanning probe measurements, data analysis, and publication of results in an international research setting.
The successful candidate will become part of a collaborative and high-performance research environment within the Department of Physics, contributing to fundamental experimental research on quantum materials alongside an interdisciplinary team at the University of Jyväskylä in Finland.

What's required
A Ph.D. in Condensed Matter Physics, Materials Science, or a closely related field is required, and the PhD degree must have been completed before the starting date. Applicants should have demonstrated hands-on experience in the fabrication and characterization of two-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures, practical experience with 2D material transfer techniques and cleanroom-based microfabrication processes, and experience in low-temperature STM measurements is strongly preferred. A strong record of productive and creative research shown by peer-reviewed publications, excellent written and oral communication skills, and the ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a collaborative research team are expected. The duties, qualification requirements, and language skills of a postdoctoral researcher are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä regulations and language skills guidelines.
