About this position
The University of Jyväskylä’s Department of Physics is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to join the Synthetic Quantum Materials Group in Finland. The project focuses on experimental nanoscience and quantum materials research using advanced Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) and the fabrication of two-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures.
The research addresses nanostructured quantum materials, including topological systems, atomically thin 2D materials, and engineered atomic-scale structures with emergent electronic and magnetic phenomena. A central goal is the controlled fabrication, clean assembly, and atomic-scale characterization of van der Waals heterostructures, including graphene-based devices.
The researcher will fabricate and assemble 2D heterostructures using controlled transfer techniques, perform structural and electronic characterization, and conduct ultrahigh-vacuum cryogenic STM measurements. The role also involves operating and maintaining state-of-the-art scanning probe microscopy systems, analyzing experimental data, publishing results in peer-reviewed journals, presenting findings at international conferences, and contributing to a collaborative research environment.
Available facilities include a 1 K STM operating under external magnetic fields up to 8 T and a 4 K STM integrated with optical spectroscopy for STM-induced luminescence and tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy at angstrom-scale spatial resolution. The researcher will work within the Department of Physics, an internationally recognized community whose materials-physics strengths include nanomaterials and thin films, quantum materials and technologies, light–matter interactions, and nanoparticle properties. Research is supported by the Nanoscience Center, the Accelerator Laboratory, and international partnerships.
The Synthetic Quantum Materials Group offers an international and multidisciplinary setting for research in quantum materials, nanofabrication, low-temperature microscopy, and emergent electronic and magnetic phenomena.

What's required
A Ph.D. in Condensed Matter Physics, Materials Science, or a closely related field, completed before the starting date, is required. Applicants must have hands-on experience fabricating and characterizing two-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures, practical experience with 2D material transfer techniques and cleanroom-based microfabrication, a strong record of productive and creative research demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications, excellent written and oral communication skills, and the ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a collaborative research team. Experience in low-temperature STM measurements is strongly preferred. Applications must include an English-language CV, motivation or cover letter, numbered publication list, and highest-degree certificate. An up-to-date public ORCID profile is required.
How to apply
Apply through the University of Jyväskylä recruitment system by 15 December 2026. Ensure your ORCID profile is current and publications are publicly visible, then upload the required English PDF documents: CV, maximum two-page motivation letter, numbered publication list, and highest-degree certificate.
