About this position

The University of Turku’s Department of Physics and Astronomy is inviting applications for two fixed-term Postdoctoral Researcher positions in the Memristor and Neuromorphic Computing Research Group. The roles sit at the interface of functional materials, device physics, microfabrication, nanomaterials, and neuromorphic computing, and candidates may apply for one track or for both. The positions are based at the Wihuri Physical Laboratory in Turku, Finland.

Track A is part of the OCEANAut / Business Finland project and focuses on memristor crossbar fabrication, yield, reliability, and device characterization. The researcher will develop reliable, reproducible crossbar structures for secure edge processing, intelligent sensors, and autonomous systems, with expected outputs including optimized fabrication workflows, robust characterization datasets, and scientific publications. This track is well suited to candidates with strong experience in thin-film patterning, cleanroom-style microfabrication, ALD, RIE, electron-beam evaporation, AFM, SEM, and electrical measurements, together with the ability to troubleshoot complex experimental processes independently.

Track B is funded by a Research Council of Finland project and focuses on perovskite quantum dots, low-dimensional perovskites, and related semiconductor nanomaterials for memristive devices and artificial synapses. The successful researcher will work across synthesis, surface chemistry, characterization, thin-film processing, and device integration. The track emphasizes reproducible nanomaterial workflows, ligand exchange, surface passivation, stability engineering, and correlations between materials properties and switching behaviour. This position also involves collaboration with Aalto University and AMOLF, and includes an expectation of around three months of research mobility at collaborating institutions.

Applicants must hold a relevant doctoral degree completed by the end of the application period. For Track A, the expected background is in materials physics, materials science, materials engineering, or a closely related field; for Track B, the relevant background is in materials chemistry, chemistry, materials science, perovskites, or semiconductor nanomaterials. Across both tracks, the University seeks researchers who can conduct independent scientific work, collaborate effectively in multidisciplinary teams, communicate clearly in English, and contribute to a supportive and inclusive research culture.

The positions are fixed-term, with Track A initially for one year with a possible extension of up to three additional years subject to project continuation, funding, and institutional decisions; Track B is for two years. The starting salary for a postdoctoral researcher is approximately EUR 3,700–4,000 per month, depending on qualifications, skills, and experience. Track B requires a doctorate in materials chemistry, chemistry, materials science, perovskites, semiconductor nanomaterials, or a closely related field, with strong hands-on experience in perovskites or nanostructures such as quantum dots or nanoplatelets, expertise in nanocrystal composition/size/surface chemistry/defects/stability control, experience with ligand exchange and/or surface passivation, structural or materials characterization (e.g. XRD, SEM, TEM, NMR), photophysical characterization (UV-visible absorption, PL, TRPL), and the ability to establish, optimize, and troubleshoot synthesis procedures independently. Across both tracks, applicants should have the teaching skills required for the position, be able to conduct independent scientific research, work both independently and in multidisciplinary teams, demonstrate strong written and spoken English, and show motivation, scientific rigor, critical thinking, responsible research practices, and good collaboration skills.
